I have never been a proponent (as a DM or a player) of a young adventurer (a relative statement if you consider race "ages") starting out his young life having already mastered to full fluency & literacy; 4-5 (or more) languages, not just of varying alien cultures but of entirely different species. Why risk life & limb adventuring when you already have a P.H.D. in foriegn language, being fluent in at least, oh let's say; 5. Geography & cultural leanings aside -(something in my mind that is far more relevant to what languages you would know or be able to learn, than what race you belong to)- What Half-elf (HALF not even full) has time to learn spell-casting, archery & martial skills, the holy rites of his clerical calling or whatever (class skills if you will), while he is also learning to speak, read and write: elvish, gnome, halfling, goblin, hobgoblin, orcish, gnoll & 'common'? I don't care if thier lifespans are roughly triple, I don't buy it. So here's how it's going to work.......... W.I.P.

For simplicity I combine many & may alter some, let's start with some of the more common, surface-encounterable races: *= spec. training/circumstances required to learn. Orcish/Ogre (Ogres are bigger, more powerful orcs in this camp.) Goblin/Hobgoblin (see above) Gnoll/Kobold (see above) Giant-Speak (the common tongue of giants)* Each race of Giant used will have it's own variant of 'Giant-speak, & thereby be treated as seperate languages Troll* Ettin The Black-Speech (sometimes called Vampiric, the secret language of the greater undead)* Troglodyte Lizardman* Bugbear ...W.I.P.
